Julia’s energy is radiant with vibrance, confidence, and a smile as she steps into the room for her interview—traits she honed during her time at the Entrepreneur Incubation Hub. Previously, she was involved with the Sozo Foundation, having joined the Sozo Educentre’s after-school programme in the Grade 9 and completing it in her final school year.
Julia embarked on her nail technician journey from her bedroom in tenth grade. After completing secondary school, she launched her nail business from her home in Vrygrond. Despite applying to Nail School twice, she opted not to proceed with the entry exams, feeling it wasn’t the right path at the time. Concurrently, she pursued a three-year Administrative Business Assistant course whilst running her thriving business, which served the Vrygrond community. Ultimately, she decided against a career as a business assistant, as it didn’t resonate with her goals.
In the third year of her home-based nail business, a client introduced her to the Sozo Foundation’s Entrepreneurial Incubation Hub. Seizing the opportunity, Julia enrolled in 2023. She reflects on the experience: “It was the perfect door that opened—to grow in knowledge and elevate my business. Such opportunities are rare in Vrygrond.” The programme equipped her with professional business coaching, social media and marketing skills, business planning, and strategic future planning, significantly broadening her business perspective. Julia credits the programme with enhancing her confidence, enabling her to effectively pitch her business spontaneously and take pride in her accomplishments. She proudly declares, “I am the CEO of a business in a community where this is unprecedented—but it’s possible, and I aim to demonstrate that.”
Thanks to her newly gained insights and skills, Julia’s business is flourishing. She is currently renovating her premises, with plans to inaugurate her new studio in Vrygrond by the end of 2023. Her five-year vision includes launching Nail Bars in other underprivileged areas, empowering women financially. Meanwhile, she continues to provide her loyal and expanding clientele with high-quality, affordable nail services. For Julia, this venture transcends mere aesthetics. “I am literally and metaphorically holding my clients’ hands through their ups and downs, becoming a confidante and offering relaxation and support, facilitated by this programme. It has the potential to assist others in similar ways across communities like Vrygrond,” she explains.
Looking ahead, Julia aspires to train future entrepreneurs, potentially as a guest speaker or business coach within the programme. She wants to convey that traditional education is not the sole path to success: “This journey is challenging; it requires strength, dedication, and self-prioritisation. This opportunity has taught me to persevere, commit to continuous improvement, and practise relentlessly. People will recognise and appreciate your quality and value.” Julia stands as a testament to how Sozo’s Entrepreneur Incubation Hub can transform lives.
