Education Programmes

Education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty

We’re tackling poverty head-on through education.

We provide education programmes like tutoring, after-school support, and senior certificate qualification to the youth of Vrygrond.

Our aim is to equip them with the necessary tools to excel in academics and pursue higher education opportunities, breaking the cycle of poverty.

After-School Tutoring

Educentre

The Sozo Educentre is our after-school tutoring and mentorship programme for high school learners from the Vrygrond community.

Educentre provides a safe space for over 110 high school learners (between the ages of 13 – 18 years) to be equipped and empowered within their own community to achieve their full potential.

High School Diploma

General Education Diploma

We have recently introduced a General Education Diploma (GED) option to our Youth Café students.

GED is a South African Grade 12, National Senior Certificate Equivalent; UK: A-Level; New Zealand: NCEA and the globally recognized International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

We are providing unemployed youth who have not completed High School with the opportunity to complete their Senior Certificate and access employment opportunities where a Matric is a minimum requirement regardless of experience.

The GED accreditation and qualification will allow our students to enrol in courses at Colleges and Technical Universities starting at NQF Level 5.

In addition to the GED Diploma, we support youth seeking to retake their Matric exams through our Second Chance Programme. Meanwhile, our Bridging Academy provides youth on the cusp of meeting the GED entrance requirements with the opportunity to bridge key gaps in Maths, English and Computer Literacy.

Matric Rewrite

Second Chance

The Second Chance programme is designed to offer learners who need to rewrite their National Senior Certificate (NSC) Matric examinations a pathway to success.

This year-long initiative equips participants with the essential tools to pass their supplementary exams and access post-school opportunities.

The programme targets individuals who have struggled academically, providing them with focused educational support, mentorship, and practical learning opportunities.

Second Chance learners are encouraged to engage in the Synergy Internship programme at Sozo, which offers practical experience by involving them as tutors, mentors, and assistants in various educational projects. This holistic approach not only aids them academically but also enriches their professional and personal development.

Leadership Development

Emerge Leadership

At the Sozo Foundation, the Emerge Leadership Programme is a beacon of transformation within our Education arm, guiding young minds through a profound year-long journey.

This meticulously designed initiative delves into the heart of personal values and aspirations. It aims to ignite passions and empower participants to chart their paths confidently and clearly.

Through tailored workshops, we address critical themes of emotional resilience, leadership, and time management, complemented by holiday programmes that enhance teamwork and relationship-building skills.

These young individuals, selected for their potential and eagerness to grow, embody the essence of leadership and resilience. Our goal is not just to educate but to inspire a generation of leaders poised to effect change within their educational, home, and community spheres.
